Running for Dreams: How Danny Montoya Turned 46 Miles Into Opportunity for Bayview Youth
At City of Dreams, we often talk about the power of showing up.
Showing up for a young person. Showing up for a community. Showing up when it would be easier not to.
Over the past few years, one of our supporters took that idea to an entirely new level.
Danny Montoya, founder of The Butterfly Joint, laced up his running shoes and completed an incredible 46.09-mile run to raise awareness and support for the youth of City of Dreams. Forty-six miles.
Not for a medal. Not for recognition. But for young people he believes deserve every opportunity to succeed.
For every mile he ran he asked his community to donate $0.50 -$2.00 per mile. With three years in the books, he’s brought over 200 members of his community together raising over $25,000 for City of Dreams youth programming.
For Danny, the run represented something much bigger than distance. It represented commitment, perseverance, and belief… the same qualities we work to instill in every young person who walks through our doors. Every mile became a reminder that change doesn't happen overnight. It takes effort. It takes consistency. It takes people willing to invest their time, energy, and resources into creating a brighter future.
Danny’s impact has extended far beyond the miles he’s run.
Through his connections and belief in our mission, he helped bring woodworking opportunities directly to our youth by securing sponsorship support for hands-on classes and workshops through The Butterfly Joint. Watching young people step into a creative space, learn new skills, and build something with their own hands was powerful. For many of them, it was their first exposure to woodworking, craftsmanship, and a different kind of learning environment outside of school. Danny has consistently found ways to turn his passions into opportunities for our youth, reminding us that mentorship and community support can take many forms.
Because of supporters like Danny, City of Dreams can continue providing mentorship, leadership development, financial literacy education, community experiences, and life-changing opportunities for youth throughout Bayview-Hunters Point and beyond. His journey reflects exactly what makes our community special: ordinary people doing extraordinary things to create opportunities for the next generation. Danny's commitment demonstrates that you don't have to be a mentor, educator, or nonprofit professional to make a difference.
You simply have to care enough to act.
This year, Danny is running 50 for his 50th Birthday and committing to support City of Dreams.

As we prepare for our upcoming Dreams By The Bay celebration on Thursday, July 16, we are reminded that every supporter has the ability to help change a life. Whether it's running 46 miles, volunteering in our garden, mentoring a young person, sponsoring an event, or making a donation, every act of generosity helps build a stronger future.
Danny, thank you for believing in our youth.Thank you for believing in our mission. Thank you for running for their dreams. Because of people like you, the future looks brighter every day.
