7 Ways to Support the Youth During Black History Month

Looking for ways to intentionally show support for Black communities during Black History Month? We’ve laid out all the ways you can stay involved with City of Dreams this February.

Why?

City of Dreams works in a neighborhood of public housing complexes in the outskirts of San Francisco, a neighborhood called Bayview-Hunter’s Point of which holds the reputation for SF’s “most isolated neighborhood.”  The reality of our work involves supporting the Black and other minority youth and families in this neighborhood who face underserved schools, higher crime rates, and social exclusion.  The reality of our work is that we have to push past the boundaries set in place by institutions and the social society in order to reach equality.

Here’s how to support:

Donate to us.  Your gift to us gives us the wiggle-room to ensure our kids are well-fed, have supplies for school, and are able to attend our regular events, among many other things.  You can also support us by doing your regular shopping at Amazon by adding us onto your Amazon Smile!

Join Dreamville.  Dreamville is our monthly giving program that gives our supporters the opportunity to create an impact all-year round.  The program allows you to give with meaning and provides our kids with a steady stream of support.. You will receive regular and exclusive updates on where your gift is going and how your gifts help us thrive.

Become a Mentor.  We take so much pride in the relationships our mentors build with our kids, and have many stories of mutual growth and long-lasting bonds fostered by this program.  By becoming a mentor, you have the opportunity to cultivate a meaningful connection with one of our kids–kids who need every bit of support.

Sign up to volunteer. We welcome volunteers to help us maintain our garden when the kids aren't able to.  You can sign up with your team as a great bonding exercise and opportunity to connect with our organization.

Propose a connection.  We are constantly looking for new places to take the youth on Super Saturdays, for Ground Zero enrichment or bonding trips, or to share with our mentees.  We welcome any and all people and organizations who want to see our kids succeed and want to contribute in the way that makes sense for them.  If you are or know someone who can connect us with an activity that will benefit the youth, contact us at info@cityofdreams.org or here.

Subscribe to us.  By providing your email, you can receive exclusive updates, invitations, reminders, and opportunities to connect with us!

Share our work with your networks.  Engagement and word of mouth goes a long way.  By regularly engaging with us via social media or by telling your friends about who we are, we are able to expand our reach and capabilities for helping these kids.
