Afterschool Programming

We aim to provide our youth with the quality education they deserve.

Here at City of Dreams, we believe every student should have access to education and literacy support. From Tuesday through Friday, we provide homework help and enrichment activities at two Bayview public housing sites.

By the end of the 4th grade, African-American, Hispanic and low-income students are already 2 years behind grade level. By the time they reach the 12th grade they are 4 years behind.

Why our work matters.

  • Dropout rates of 16 to 24-years-old students who come from low income families are seven times more likely to drop out than those from families with higher incomes.

  • 40% of children living in poverty aren’t prepared for primary schooling.

  • Children that live below the poverty line are 1.3 times more likely to have developmental delays or learning disabilities than those who don’t live in poverty.

  • Less than 30% of students in the bottom quarter of incomes enroll in a 4 year school. Among that group – less than 50% graduate.

What we offer.

Afterschool programming is an essential resource for youth to not only improve academic performance but also encourage safety, foster connections, and prevent juvenile crime.

Led by our trained staff, our afterschool programming offers engaging activities that help with youth development while also building their academic, social, and emotional skills.

  • Research done by Policy Analysis for California Education (PACE) concludes that student learning has suffered during the pandemic, creating a wider equity gap for low-income youth.

We strive to keep our youth on track with their academic development. Our staff provides tutoring during Homework Hour to make sure school assignments are understood and completed.

  • Our strong curricular design facilitated by our Site Coordinator and Program Director helps ensure our youth receive the proper learning outcomes.

Our curriculum and lessons are based on recent and relevant world events. During Black History Month, we create lessons on legendary Black inventors, extraordinary Black leadership, and creative Black artists.

  • Our workshops spark critical thinking skills that help youth reflect and understand different point of views while helping make sense of the world.

A few of our workshops include team building activities, mock interviews, and woodshop classes.

  • According to the World Health Organization (WHO), physical activity improves cognitive outcomes (academic performance, executive function) and mental health (reduced symptoms of depression).

We keep our youth engaged in physical activity by taking them on hikes to nearby parks and beaches. We also incorporate yoga led by local yogis to help with meditation, mindfulness, and healthy body flows.

  • It’s no secret that Bayview Hunter’s Point is known to be one of the most dangerous areas in San Francisco, having some of the highest crime rates due to gun violence.

Our community space offers a safe space for our youth to eat, learn, and play. With our afterschool programming, our youth are also steered away from the ongoing cycle of gang violence and drugs surrounding the neighborhood.

How we’ve helped our youth reach their academic goals:

During the pandemic,

many of our youth were left without laptops, internet access, and most importantly, education. As a mission to help serve our community, we turned our community space into a community learning hub for students to easily stay on track with online classes, all while social distancing.
