More as Mentors: Summer is the Perfect Time to Start!

The City of Dreams youth are starting their summer with a booked calendar of activities!  Super Saturdays for June, July, and August will entail water parks, camping, surfing, and more as the kids take a needed break from school.

Yet, many of the youth are missing out on a summer detail crucial to the City of Dreams mission–mentors.

Mentor-mentee relationships are the heart of City of Dreams.  We are firm about the presence of positive figures around impressionable youth.  To maintain this idea, we are faced with the critical task of finding individuals who can volunteer their time and effort to our kids.  Our mentors are actors in the victories of our youth’s confrontations with school, relationships, and trauma.  We believe that the structural barriers of an under-resourced BIPOC community can be navigated in part by individuals that appreciate and work with these circumstances always in mind.

Right now, we stand at 14 one-on-one mentors, ranging in attendance and overall activeness with the program.

Be that as it may, our wonderful group of mentors is looking for new recruits to fill the need of the other unmatched youth.  The need is growing as we expand from our current 46 active kids.

Entangled with life’s commitments, it can be hard for many striving mentors to dedicate time to our kids. We’re here to reassure any potential friends that summer is a great time to start!

One-on-one mentorship is also not the only form of mentorship we are looking for!  Become an active participant volunteer in our programming by speaking at panels, volunteering regularly at events, sharing a skill that could benefit the youth.  In the past, people like Dennis, a retired neighbor to our site, have donated time to teach a couple math tutoring sessions after school.  All positive involvement counts!

Hearts and minds open, the youth are prepared for a summer filled with fun, without the pressure of school.  The City of Dreams calendar offers several opportunities for potential mentors to tag along and get to know the youth.  In the past, mentors have joined us surfing, to amusement parks, community events, sports games, and more.

As we continue to extend our reach to more young people in Bayview, we encourage those of you who are considering becoming a mentor to sign up!  Mentors are a scarce resource as it is so, we will ensure you receive the proper training and preparation for one-on-one matching.  You can take part in the deep healing of traumas and childhood enrichment for Bayview kids.  You will be surrounded by other selfless individuals who care for the wellbeing of this community.  We welcome you to take the next step.
